This week at the UBS Hong Kong Open, it’s not just the pros that will benefit from the birdies and eagles they make. Continuing on the success of the past two years, “Birdies for Good” will see donations made to four charity partners of the tournament.
Every birdie, eagle and albatross made by the players over the four days at Hong Kong Golf Club will result in $50, $100 or $500 donations from the Friends of Asia Hong Kong, and will directly benefit four local charities: the Autism Partnership Foundation, InspiringHK Sports Foundation, Playwright Children’s Play Association and The Hub Hong Kong.
In 2015, the initiative was one of the most successful fundraisers of the entire European Tour season, raising more than HK$2.4m.
In addition to the donations, we will also be selecting our Birdies for Good Birdie of the Day. On the first day, that belonged to Wen-tang Lin. The 2008 champion showed he still knows how to read the greens at Hong Kong Golf Club with this incredible birdie putt on the par three fifth hole.
As for the second round, the Birdies for Good Birdie of the Day went to 2015 UBS Hong Kong Open champion Justin Rose. The Englishman rolled in a 20 foot putt at the sixth hole, one of six birdies on the day for the 2017 Race to Dubai runner up.
On an entertaining Moving Day in Fanling, 2017 Race to Dubai Champion Tommy Fleetwood's fine eagle putt from off the green at the 10th hole won the Birdies for Good Birdie of the Day.
So after three days of Birdies for Good, we have seen 21 eagles and 975 birdies, meaning a total of US$50,850 has been raised so far this week.
