The Road to Mallorca arrives in Germany this week for the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG at Wittelsbacher Golfclub. Here’s everything you need to know…
Tree-lined Wittelsbacher
Founded in 1988, Wittelsbacher Golfclub is the creation of Dutch golf course architect Joan Dudok van Heel and is home to 200-year-old oak and linden trees that line the fairways, providing a unique challenge in Bavaria. The course plays as a par 73, measuring 7,400 yards and will this year host its third Big Green Egg German Challenge.
Spanish success
In two years at Wittelsbacher, two Spaniards have triumphed. In the first edition of the event, Angel Hidalgo carded four rounds of 68 to win by two shots ahead of the chasing pack. Fast forward 12 months and it was another Spaniard out in front. With a one stroke lead going into the final round, Alejandro Del Rey eventually triumphed on the second playoff hole. Could it be three from three this year? Quite possibly. Manuel Elvira finished in solo third on this course last year, and the 26-year-old has been outstanding during 2023 so far, registering three second place finishes and three other top tens.
A new Road to Mallorca Number One
With a maiden Challenge Tour win at the Euram Bank Open last week, South African Casey Jarvis shot to the top of the Road to Mallorca Rankings for the first time this season. The South African led by five strokes going into the final day but had to hold off a late charge from Scotland’s Euan Walker to eventually claim a memorable win. The victory, alongside Jarvis’ three second place finishes already this year, sees him usurp Ugo Coussaud at the top, a position the Frenchman had held since week seven. With Coussaud not in the field this week, it provides an opportunity for Jarvis to cement his place at the top.
