Best shots of 2018: Paul Streeter

The 2018 Staysure Tour season featured many magnificent shots, from pin-point approaches to chip-in birdies, from eye-catching eagles to unforgettable hole-in-ones. Here we look at Paul Streeter’s amazing approach shot on the first play-off hole at the Costa Blanca Benidorm Senior Masters.

The Englishman bogeyed the final hole of regulation and suddenly found himself heading to a play-off with home-favourite Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who was making his first Staysure Tour appearance on home-soil.

Having led for the majority of the day, Streeter could have been forgiven for dwelling on the late dropped shot, but instead, proved his resilience with the stunning approach he produced into the par four 18thhole.

In the play-off, the recent Travis Perkins Masters winner calmly found the fairway off the tee and was left with 159 yards to a pin that was tucked on the top left corner of the large three-tiered, undulating green.

Complicating things further, just 15 feet shy the hole sat a treacherous greenside bunker, which had forced most players to land their ball on the right side of the green and take on a long two-putt for par. Streeter, however, was determined to rectify the error he displayed only 20 minutes earlier when he had found the bunker and made bogey.

With one true strike of his eight iron, the 52 year old sent the ball directly on-line and seconds later it landed with a soft bounce and checked to within three feet of the hole. A mesmerising shot under pressure, which received waves of applause from the gallery.

“I’d say that shot is up there with the best I’ve hit in my career. To do it against such a great champion like Miguel makes it feel even better,” said Streeter, who tapped in for birdie to seal the inaugural Costa Blanca Benidorm Senior Masters title and claim the second win of his rookie over-50s season.
