There were plenty of impressive performances on the Staysure Tour in 2019 with three special displays catching the eye from last year.
Peter Baker – Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde
Peter Baker, in only his second full season on the Staysure Tour, won his maiden over-50s title at the Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde with a wire-to-wire victory.
The 1993 Ryder Cup player recorded rounds of 66-70-67 for a 13 under par total, five strokes better than second placed James Kingston, to become the 11th player to win on the European Tour, European Challenge Tour and Staysure Tour.
It was a dominating victory for the Englishman in Arras and the only wire-to-wire triumph on the Staysure Tour in 2019.
Paul Lawrie – Scottish Senior Open
If there is one senior star who can tame the Scottish links, then Paul Lawrie is the man. The 2019 Rookie of the Year had a fairytale outing at the Scottish Senior Open at Craigielaw Golf Club when he battled the gusty conditions to win his first Staysure Tour title.
It was his fourth victory on home soil and his third on Scottish links following the 1999 Open Championship and 2001 Dunhill Links Championship, with his display at Craigielaw once again showing his links golf prowess.
An opening round of 68 saw him top the leaderboard at the end of day one and he remained in the mix following a one over par second round of 72, as Peter Fowler recorded the lowest round of the week, a five under par 66, to move ahead of the home favourite.
With the conditions turning wilder during the final round, the Scot felt at home on the East Lothian links, shooting a level par 71 to win the title, finishing as the only player under par after 54 holes.
José Coceres – Murhof Legends – Austrian Senior Open
José Coceres was one of three players to win twice in 2019, claiming his inaugural Staysure Tour title at the Swiss Seniors Open before doubling his tally at the Murhof Legends – Austrian Senior Open two months later.
The Argentine will always remember his maiden victory in Switzerland, but it was his win in neighbouring Austria that stood out as one of the performances of the season. His 19 under par total was the lowest 54-hole score of the year on the Staysure Tour, including the lowest round of the campaign, a ten under par 62.
Rounds of 66-62-69 saw Coceres crowned the first Murhof Legends – Austrian Senior Open champion as he recorded his best three rounds on the Staysure Tour to lift the trophy.
