Wil Besseling carded the best round of his career as a nine under par 63 moved him into tied eighth going into the final day of the Kazakhstan Open on 12 under par, six shots off the lead set by Frenchman Alexander Levy.
The Dutchman did not drop a single shot on moving day in the European Challenge Tour’s ‘Major’ at Zhailjau Golf Resort in Almaty, and two superb purple patches elevated him 49 places as he birdied three in a row on the front nine and four in a row on the back nine.
Besseling teed off in more difficult conditions in the morning in Kazakhstan and parred the opening four holes before picking up four shots in the following five holes to reach the turn in four under par.
Another birdie at the 11th was followed by four consecutive birdies from the 13th hole and the 26 year old was delighted with his performance.
“It feels great to play like that,” he said. “After the bogey on my last hole yesterday I struggled to make the cut so every day is different, that’s for sure. It’s been quite a movement in the right direction so I’m really happy about today.
“I don’t think it was my best golf but I just holed a lot of good putts and I kept it going, which is nice. It’s my best score ever so it’s very pleasing.
“It was cold and rainy in the morning and a little windy, so it played harder in the morning and I got through the first few holes very well. Then I holed a long putt on the sixth for birdie and I chipped in on the seventh, which was a great bonus. I even missed a few birdie opportunities.
“On the back nine I was hitting my approaches close and made plenty of birdies so I was happy to finish that way and I had two very good streaks in my round.
“It’s nice to be up there and give myself a good chance for tomorrow. I’m definitely closer that I was yesterday so I'm really happy about that and let’s see what we can do tomorrow.”
