Belgium takes digital lead with Club Knockout

Amateur match play winners from 60 golf clubs across Belgium will have the opportunity to compete in their very own Belgian Knockout-style competition, set to be held over the same weekend as the European Tour event at Rinkven Golf Club, from May 30 - June 2, 2019.

The Club Knockout initiative comes following the collaboration between the Belgian Knockout organisation and We Are Matchplay (WAMP), an app created for golfers to help organise match play tournaments, keep track of their scores and compare statistics against other players around the world.

As a result, nearly 2,000 amateur golfers have downloaded the WAMP app in Belgium and those signed up now have the opportunity from Monday February 11 to play for a place in the Club Knockout Final. Hosted at Rinkven Golf Club in Antwerp, the Belgian Knockout and Club Knockout Final will be played concurrently over the same weekend, with amateur golfers competing on the one half of the Championship Course, with the professionals battling it out for the win as well.

Jeremy Anciaux, CEO of the Belgian Knockout, said: “The WAMP app was a great opportunity for our ‘Club Knockout’ concept. We contacted every Belgian golf club to organise their own Club Knockout using the app and the majority have subscribed and are now using it. It doesn’t cost them a thing and the WAMP app does all the administration.

“On top of that, the winner of each golf club is invited to play the Club Knockout Final during the Sunday of the Belgian Knockout, playing at the same time as the professionals. Clubs are happy, sponsors are getting greater visibility, and we are thrilled to help provide this amazing opportunity for amateur golfers to get an actual taste of a European Tour event through their own competition on WAMP.”

The Club Knockout is the perfect opportunity for amateur golfers to experience the new playing format introduced by Pieters and the WAMP app, with participants also eligible to win incredible prizes provided by PietersProductions and their associated sponsors.

All amateurs who qualify to play on Sunday June 2 will also experience the full “VIP Tour Pro” treatment and will get to enjoy the luxuries of the Player Lounge, as well as the official practice facilities.

Michael Cole, Chief Technology Officer at the European Tour, said: “The Club Knockout initiative is extremely exciting and to have so many amateur golfers and Belgian clubs involved in their own competition via the WAMP app, we must commend the Belgian Knockout organisers for their creative approach to engaging their local community and helping grow the game of golf with this fantastic technology.
