Battle for Rookie of the Year 

The MCB Tour Championship – Mauritius is the final event of the 2019 Staysure Tour season and will see four awards presented at the conclusion of the tournament, including the 2019 Rookie of the Year award.

Last year, Paul Streeter claimed the title after winning twice in his rookie year at the Travis Perkins Masters and the Costa Blanca Benidorm Senior Golf Masters to end the season ninth on the Order of Merit. Here are the three contenders for this year’s award.

Paul Lawrie – 11th

The 1999 Open Champion turned 50 at the beginning of the year and has impressed during his debut season as a senior, winning once and recording three further top tens, including a runner-up finish at the inaugural Murhof Legends – Austrian Senior Open and a share of third at the Farmfoods European Senior Masters hosted by Peter Baker.

The Scotsman’s victory on home soil at Craigielaw Golf Club was a crowning moment in his debut season as a senior, winning for the fourth time on Scottish soil by adding a Staysure Tour title to his long list of accolades.

Gary Evans – 17th

Another player to turn 50 at the beginning of the year, Evans has settled into life on the Staysure by claiming four top ten results in 2019. He made his senior debut at the Jordan Mixed Open presented by Ayla and three events later finished third at the maiden Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship hosted by Ian Woosnam, carding a final round of 67, five under par, in difficult conditions.

His second top five of a debut campaign on the senior ranks came in the Indian Ocean at the MCB Tour Championship – Madagascar, where he led after the opening round and finished the week in a share of fourth place.

Dan Olsen – 22nd

The American sealed his 2019 Staysure Tour playing rights by claiming the third card at Qualifying School in January. Since then he has clinched four top ten results, including a share of fourth at the first staging of the Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde.

Olsen has also finished inside the top ten at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open, Farmfoods European Senior Masters hosted by Peter Baker and at the MCB Tour Championship – Seychelles last week.
