American Allen, the 2009 Senior US PGA Champion, shot a brilliant second round 63 at Omaha Country Club in Nebraska to open up a five shot advantage on ten under par.

His compatriots Rocco Mediate and Jeff Sluman are the nearest challengers in an all-American top ten.

Scotland’s Montgomerie, making his Senior Major debut after turning 50 last month, had started well with a one under 69 leaving him just two behind after the opening round.

But the eight-time European Number One had six bogeys and three birdies in a second round 73 to slip to two over and 12 off the pace.

His former Ryder Cup partner Langer was also two over in a share of 25th after carding a 74 on day two.

Meanwhile England’s Roger Chapman will not be able to defend his title over the weekend after a 76 saw him miss the cut on ten over.
