Kiradech Aphibarnrat made it through to the last 16 of the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth after a roller coaster of a contest against Ben Eccles.
After three days of stroke play at Lake Karrinyup Country Club, it was now down to a six-hole match play knockout, with players facing off against each other over the tenth, 11th, 13th, 14th, 12th and 18th, with a shootout hole to separate those still all square.
Aphibarnrat needed a brilliant up-and-down to make last night's nine-man play-off and was the last man into the knockout stages after another four trips up the last.
In the first round on Sunday, he birdied the sixth match play hole to prevail one up and set up a contest against Yisaku Miyazoto.
There were also first round wins for three-time European Tour winner Marcus Fraser, Italy's Andrea Pavan, amateur Min Woo Lee, South Korea's Yi-keun Chang and Australians Matthew Millar, Callan O'Reilly and James Nitties.
Aphibarnrat birdied the first but Eccles hit back with a gain of his own before the third was halved in pars. Another birdie for the Thai gave him the upper hand but Eccles once again squared the contest before Aphibarnrat prevailed.
Fraser needed six trips up the shootout hole before he could overcome Thai Poom Saksansin.
The Australian birdied the first and third and Saksansin the second and fourth before both men birdied the shootout hole five times in a row. A sixth two in a row then gave Fraser the win and a last 16 contest against Lucas Herbert.
A birdie at the second attempt on the shootout hole handed Pavan the win against Stephen Leaney.
A bogey was enough to put Leaney one up on the second but a Pavan birdie on the fourth took the contest to extra holes. Pavan will next face American Sean Crocker.
Satoshi Kodaira entered the week as the highest-ranked player in the the field at 37th in the Official World Golf Ranking but was taken down 3 and 1 by Lee who is 15th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
They halved their first hole in birdies but a gain sent Lee one up on the second and he took the third as Kodaira conceded. The fourth was then halved in birdies before Lee won the fifth with a fifth birdie in a row to set up a clash with top seed Prom Messawat.
Grant Forrest and Millar both parred their first three holes before birdieing the fourth but a Millar birdie on the fifth was enough to give him a match against Sam Horsfield after a one up win.
Pavit Tangkamolprasert went one up with a birdie on the second but O'Reilly then rolled off a trio of threes to win 2 and 1 and will next face Thorbjørn Olesen.
Chang set up a match against Brad Kennedy as he birdied the first, second and fourth to take down Zander Lombard 3 and 2, with the South African recording a single bogey on the fourth.
Birdies on the second and fourth had put Nick Cullen two up but Nitties made a pair of threes to take the match to the shootout hole where a Nitties birdie gave him victory at the first attempt and a showdown against Dimitrios Papadatos.
