Sustainability

Find out more about the sustainability initiatives launched at the 2024 Amgen Irish.

FREE DRINKING WATER STATION

Spectators are encouraged to bring their own water bottles which can be refilled throughout the day at our water station, located in the main village. Hospitality guests can also re-fill bottles at a dedicated Aqua Libra drinking station in their Reception area.

ENERGY

HVO fuel – All of our generators on site will be powered by HVO fuel. HVO stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil, alternatively known as renewable diesel. HVO fuel is a fossil-free alternative to regular mineral diesel and results in up to a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

We are trialing the use of solar power in some of our Contractors’ cabins, as well as to run the lighting towers in practice area, with a view to expanding these in future years.

CATERING

Our catering suppliers are committed to reducing the environmental footprint of the event and are working on the following initiatives:

  • Using locally sourced ingredients to lower the carbon footprint and support the local economy
  • Supplying compostable packaging, eating utensils, and hand towels
  • Ensuring that all packaging is as eco-friendly as possible (e.g. the ink used for printing on packaging is biodegradable)
  • Updating procurement systems to ensure that food wastage is kept to the absolute minimum
  • Using vegetable, meat, and fish trimmings to make stocks on-site
  • Waste systems to ensure that general, recyclable, and compostable items are sorted and dealt with appropriately

All the Heineken bars at the event are operating a re-usable cup system, whereby customers pay a £2 deposit for the use of sustainable cups which is redeemable against drinks purchased.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

At the Amgen Irish Open we aim to send zero waste to landfill. We are providing separate bins all around the site to help us sort between the different types of rubbish which can then be sent on for appropriate recycling. Behind the scenes we are asking all our suppliers to build using sustainable materials and we are making sure these are sent for recycling or re-purposing after the event is over. For example, wood that is used in our temporary constructions will be gifted to a local youth charity after the event. We are also aiming to reduce the amount of netting which is used, replacing it with cladding which is much easier to recycle.

BUSES & TRANSPORT

We are encouraging spectators to use public transport, walk, or cycle to the event site where possible. Bike racks will be set up near the Welcome Tent.

LEGACY

We are making a donation on behalf of every amateur golfer who plays in our two official Pro-Am events to the Woodland Trust. This donation will be used to source trees that have been grown on the island of Ireland to be planted at Mourne Park in the 2024/25 planting season. The planting will add to this magnificent natural habitat which can be enjoyed for many generations to come, as well as help to offset the event’s carbon footprint.

GOING FORWARD

The DP World Tour is committed to staging greener, more sustainable events around the world, embracing initiatives that reduce our carbon footprint, and working with our partners and suppliers to improve our output. For more information click here: https://www.europeantour.com/golf-for-good/
