Allen John wins second gold medal at Deaflympics

Allen John successfully defended his gold medal for Germany at the 24th Summer Deaflympics.

The golf tournament of the the 24th Summer Deaflympics was held in Caxias do Sul, southern Brazil, from May 7-11, 2022. John travelled to Brazil as a defending champion, having secured gold for Team Germany at the last Deaflympics in Turkey in 2017. The German impressed on the first two days by winning the stroke play qualification with rounds of 68-69.

John then won his first knockout match against Chile's Nicolas Garfias before defeating Canadian Alexandre Ouellet in the quarterfinals. The German came out on top in the semi final against Kenyan Isaac Ogolla Makokha and faced Canadian Russell Bowie in the final.

John successfully defended his title and was delighted to secure gold for his country.

"I am just super happy to have won the gold medal again for Germany," he said. "There is nothing better than being able to compete for your country. That it worked out with the title defence is just awesome. The week was a lot of fun and I would like to thank the local organizers who made the event possible and the entire German delegation around national coach Heiko Burkhard."

"The Deaflympics are the most important platform for athletes with hearing disabilities worldwide and I hope that my gold medal can help to further raise awareness for deaf sports."

John will now turn his attention to the European Challenge Tour as he looks to secure DP World Tour playing privileges in 2023.
