All eyes on Moray for Scottish Open shoot-out

Following the huge success of the inaugural event in East Lothian last year, another exciting Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Qualifier is on the cards this weekend from July 2-3.

The 36-hole shoot-out takes place at Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth on Saturday and Sunday, when five places will be up for grabs in next week's £3.25million showpiece at Castle Stuart Golf Links.

The qualifier, which has attracted another fascinating mix of full-time Tour pros, PGA pros and amateurs, is staged by the PGA in association with VisitScotland and the European Tour.

It was introduced to offer more Scottish players the chance to play in their national Open and ticked lots of boxes 12 months ago, especially due to one of the qualifiers being a young amateur in Tantallon's Calum Hill.

"The inaugural Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open qualifier was a great success last year and we are looking forward to building on that when the event is held this weekend at Moray Golf Club," said PGA in Scotland secretary Shona Malcolm.

"We are fortunate to be staging the event once again at one of Scotland's top links courses and will continue to do so."

Martin Gilbert, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Asset Management, added: “Aberdeen are proud to support Scottish golf at all levels of the game, so to continue to provide this opportunity to up and coming golfers is very important to us.

“The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart itself offers four prized spots at this year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon. What a story it would be if a Scottish player was make it through this qualifying event at the fantastic Moray Golf Club.”

Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland, said: “We are delighted to once again be supporting the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Qualifier, where Scottish golfers have the unique opportunity to qualify to play in their national open in Scotland, the Home of Golf.

“Moray will provide a fantastic setting for the event and shows the strength in depth of quality golf courses in the Highlands, which is already one of Scotland’s most popular golf tourism destinations.

“The excitement for the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open returning to Castle Stuart is already building and nowhere will that excitement be felt more than at Moray GC during the qualifier. I’d like to wish all the players the best of luck in qualifying and I look forward to seeing some of them at Castle Stuart.”

Moray Golf Club has a long history when it comes to hosting tournaments, having staged a PGA EuroPro Tour event as recently as 2013, when Tartan Tour player Paul McKechnie claimed victory.
