Alejandro Cañizares leads by one in Crans Montana after completing second round

Alejandro Cañizares will take a one-shot lead into the third round of the weather-affected 2022 Omega European Masters after adding two more birdies on Saturday morning to sign for a second-round 63.

Almost three hours were lost on Friday after play was suspended at 13.09 local time at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club due to electrical activity in the area, meaning many of the afternoon starters had to come back early on Saturday to finish off their second rounds.

Cañizares had completed 13 holes before the players ran out of daylight at around 8pm on day two, finding himself tied alongside South African Thriston Lawrence at the summit on 13 under par as the hooter sounded.

When play resumed at 07.40 on Saturday morning Cañizares, who had started his second round from the tenth tee, made birdies at the seventh and ninth to jump to 15 under.

Lawrence had four holes to complete on Saturday and managed to birdie the 18th to sign for a 64 and go into the third round one behind Cañizares.

Louis de Jager, Matt Wallace and Eduardo de la Riva were another two shots further back on 12 under.

On Friday, Cañizares had opened his second round with a birdie on the tenth before giving the shot straight back at the par-three 11th.

He bounced back with birdies at the 13th and 14th before holing his approach into the 15th for an eagle to jump to 12 under and lead on his own.

The Spaniard closed his front nine with another birdie - this time from nine feet - to get to 13 under.

A second bogey arrived at the tricky first after he missed the fairway off the tee, and although he came close to bouncing back with a birdie on the next hole, his 21-foot putt hit the hole but did not drop.

After almost holing his approach at the fourth, he tapped in for a birdie there before darkness prevented him from finishing up on the fifth green.

Returning on Saturday, he tapped in for a close-range par at the fifth before birdieing the seventh from inside three feet.

He managed to get up and down from a bunker to save par at the short eighth before finishing with a 12-foot birdie putt on the ninth.

Cañizares, 39, is searching for his third DP World Tour title and his first since the 2014 Trophée Hassan II.

Lawrence had made five straight pars in the heavy afternoon rain on Friday before picking up his first birdie of the day at the sixth.

Further gains followed at the seventh, ninth and tenth before he bogeyed the 11th.

Back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th took Lawrence level with Cañizares on 13 under before play was suspended due to darkness.

He holed from 14 feet at the 18th to add another birdie and move to 14 under par.
