Home to the Spanish Open on three occasions (2000, 2009, 2014), the Stadium Couse was originally designed by Spanish legend Angel Gallardo and Ryder Cup star Neil Coles MBE with a view to hosting The 1997 Ryder Cup – which is why it had spacious holes and banking.
It gained a new lease of life after it was acquired by Denis O’Brien in 2008, and the course underwent significant upgrades. The par 72 course was lengthened to 7,333yds, and some of its iconic holes were toughened, including the lakeside 3rd green, expansive par-3 11th and the 18th fairway.
It has since held the European Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage on numerous occasions, and the 2014 Spanish Open - a history making event which saw Miguel Angel Jimenez crowned as the oldest winner in European Tour history.

PGA Catalunya on the European Tour
When PGA Catalunya’s Stadium course originally opened it immediately held the 1999 Subaru Sarazen World Open, won by Thomas Bjorn, before going on to host three Spanish Opens.
The first two editions were won by Brian Davis (2000) and Thomas Levet (2009), before returning in 2014 for Jimenez’s victory following significant changes to the course.
That year, 2018 Ryder Cup Captain Bjorn was quick to vocalise how impressed he was with the changes.
“Now it has matured as a whole and it is a very, very good track, a proper golf course,” said Bjorn.
“You have to think your way around, drive the ball very well to keep yourself out of trouble here and obviously try to get yourself fin the right positions on the greens.
“They have lengthened it a bit over the years and it is a big golf course today. There are no two ways about it, you just have to play well.”
PGA Catalunya also played host to the Final Stage of European Tour Qualifying School from 2008 – 2016.
