30 years on: Faldo becomes first Englishman to win the Masters

The 2019 Masters tournament marks 30 years since Nick Faldo became the first English player to put their arm in a Green Jacket in 1989.

This would be the first of three victories around the hallow turf of Augusta National, after he defended his title in 1990 before making it a trio of wins in 1996.

However, it isn’t easy winning the year’s first Major.

“To come and win in America is harder,” Faldo told the New York Times. “It's an away game every week over here. This one was far more a battle of emotions for me than the British Open (1987) because of the way I played.”

Leading alongside America’s Lee Trevino after 36 holes at three under par, Faldo struggled in the difficult conditions on Saturday, which led to a suspension in play, with the third round being completed on Sunday for the first time in the tournament’s history.

The Englishman was three over for the day before the suspension, dropping a further two shots when play restarted on Sunday, meaning he would start the final round five strokes behind leader Ben Crenshaw.

However, Faldo showed the fighting spirit that saw him pick up his first Major victory at the 1987 Open Championship, picking up four birdies in his first seven holes.

Following two miraculous birdies at holes 16 and 17, Faldo would post a final round of 65 to hold the clubhouse lead at five under par.

It was America’s Scott Hoch who held the lead, but a short par putt at 17 would slip by, dropping him into a tie with Faldo and Crenshaw at five under par.

Hoch would then narrowly miss a birdie putt at the last to win, with Crenshaw making an agonising bogey after hitting the fairway to miss out on a play-off.

It was looking like all of Faldo’s hard work would be for nothing during the first play-off hole, after missing the tenth green with his approach, finding the short right-side bunker, with Hoch reaching the green.

He could only get his ball to within 15 feet though, and would ultimately miss his par putt.

This left Hoch with a two-foot putt, and his third putt of the day, to win the tournament.

Incredibly, the American missed and Faldo’s dream was still alive.

Having made bogey on the 11th hole in all four rounds, the Englishman was arguably up against it as the players stood on the 11th tee.

However, after hitting his approach to 25 feet, Faldo rolled home the putt for birdie to become the first Englishman to win the Masters.

“It was ecstasy to make that putt,” Faldo said after claiming victory. “It was a dream. You dream it was going to happen. When it does right before your eyes, you can't believe it.”

A total of 30 years have passed since then, and Faldo’s three Masters victories are the most by any Englishman – countryman Danny Willett’s victory in 2016 is the only other English triumph since Faldo’s final win in 1996.
