Gary Player Country Club shows its teeth
Strong winds made life very difficult indeed on Friday, with the leading score after 36 holes one shot worse than Max Homa's 18-hole tally of six under. The tricky closing stretch tripped a number of players up, including defending champion Homa, who led by two with three holes to play before back-to-back double bogeys on the 16th and 17th derailed him. Julien Guerrier also struggled at the 16th and 17th, making bogeys there, but produced a vital par save on the 18th to lead by one shot at the halfway stage on five under par.
Bunker brilliance from Guerrier
We were treated to some world-class shots on Friday but not many of them were better than Guerrier's effort from the bunker at the eighth. The ball landed a few feet from the cup, took a couple of hops and sailed into the hole for a bonus birdie.
