2018 best comebacks: Philip Golding

Ahead of the new season getting under way, we take a look at the best moments from the Staysure Tour in 2018. Here we focus on one of the best comebacks of the season, Philip Golding’s final round at the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship to clinch the title.

The Englishman began his final round six shots behind the leaders at London Golf Club, but quickly got his day going with four birdies in his opening five holes to set the foundations for one of his most memorable days on the Staysure Tour.

With the overnight leaders being caught by the chasing pack, Golding shot five under par on his front nine to race up the leaderboard and sit in prime striking position at the turn.

He made further gains on the tenth, 11thand 12thholes to join the leading pack and with five holes to play he had the chance to set a new course-record.

A birdie on the 15thhole was followed by his first bogey of the day, and after making par of the par three 17th, Golding only had the eagle-able par five 18thleft.

With the nine under par course-record set earlier in the week, the 56 year old had a 20-foot eagle putt to sign for a round of 62, ten under par, to set the target of 19 under par. However, the ball lipped out and he tapped in for his tenth birdie of the day to tie the course-record and sit in the clubhouse on 18 under par.

The four-time Staysure Tour winner was six groups in front of the overnight leaders and waited with bated breath, but it was worth the wait, as his target could not be reached and he lifted his fifth over-50s title, becoming the 2018 Staysure PGA Seniors Champion.
