Day three digest: Dubai Duty Free Irish Open

Scores were low, spirits were high and we had a 59 watch as the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open produced a stunning spectacle on Moving Day at the second Rolex Series event of the season.

Rock rolls into history books

Robert Rock already has once distinction at the Irish Open, taking home the winner's cheque but not the trophy as he lost to amateur Shane Lowry in a play-off in 2009. Well now he has another after carding six closing birdies in a round of 60 that is the lowest in event history and equals the lowest ever at a Rolex Series event. He even had a putt for an eagle and a 59 on the last but his closing birdie moved him to 13 under, one clear of Rafa Cabrera Bello and Eddie Pepperell. "That's the first chance I've had to do it," he said. "It's disappointing not to but 60 is a great score. It's my best score."

Brother to brother

Twin brothers Gary and Guy Tilston made headlines at last season's Oman Open as they were on the bag for Matthew Southgate and Marcel Siem respectively when both players recorded holes-in-one on the same day. Now aces may be rare but they are not as rare as 59s so the caddying duo almost achieved an even greater feat on Friday. Gary was caddying for Robert Rock as he saw his putt agonisngly miss on the low side for just the second sub 60 round in European Tour history. Who was on Oliver Fisher's bag when he made the first last seaon in Portugal? Guy, of course.

Better luck next time, mate

Speaking of that historic 59, Mr 59 himself Fisher was playing in the group behind Rock and couldn't resist going to send his - ahem - condolences to his fellow Englishman.

The race for Portrush

The top three players in the top ten not already exempt at the end of Sunday's play will earn themselves a spot in the field at The Open Championship. Those spots are currently filled by European Tour veterans Rock and Bernd Wiesberger and tournament invite Cormac Sharvin. A native of Northern Ireland, Sharvin would be the fairytale winner of a place at Portrush but he has the likes of European Tour winners Paul Waring, Wade Ormsby, Edoardo Molinari and George Coetzee snapping at his heels.

MLV bags a big bird

With the tee brought up 60 yards, the best chance to get an eagle two on a par four on Saturday was at the 13th. Mike Lorenzo-Vera is never the one to take the past most travelled, however, and he produced this moment of magic at the ninth.
