The home favourite made history last year by becoming the first Chinese player to win a European Tour event on home soil, and should he emerge victorious on Sunday, he will enter the history books again.

In the 21 stagings of this event, no player has ever won it twice but Wu - who has not missed a cut in a regular European Tour event since 2013 - is hoping to buck that trend.

"Last year in Shanghai I won the championship and I was very excited and I will remember that moment forever," he said.

"I was very happy to have won. It was the peak of my career and my first win on the European Tour. I feel very confident right now."

Topwin Golf and Country Club in Beijing is playing host to a European Tour event for the first time and Wu echoed the sentiments of Miguel Angel Jiménez, believing this week's tournament will be won and lost on the greens.

"The greens are difficult," he said. "The greens are very hard. I will grasp the putting skill, it's very important for me. I will try my best to put the ball in the right place on the green."

The Volvo China Open is the second consecutive week for the European Tour International Schedule in China and it will make a third trip to the country for the WGC - HSBC Champions in October.

There are a host of local players in the field this week and Wu is confident the game will continue to grow in a country of more than a billion people.

Golf has developed very well in China and there are more and more people engaged in this sport - Wu Ashun

"There will be more and more Chinese players. This week we have 36 Chinese players in the field.

"They have started playing in many countries in the world and the level of competition is much higher."
