'World class’ Langer the leading German

Bernhard Langer may be comfortably the oldest player in the field in the Porsche European Open, but he once again showed his enduring class with a final round of 69 to finish as Germany’s leading player.

The 58 year old, who has dominated the senior circuit over the past eight seasons, finished on eight under par after breaking par in three rounds at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach. After signing off yet another impressive performance, Langer said he played some of the best shots of his career on Sunday in front of the appreciative home galleries.

That is quite some statement, given his illustrious career to date, which has included two Masters Tournament wins among his 42 titles on the European Tour alone.

Langer co-designed the Beckenbauer Course at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach and was back in European Tour action to support the return of the European Open, which he won twice, in 1985 and 1995.

He was on the leaderboard again on Thursday after an opening round of 66, and subsequent rounds of 71, 70 and that closing 69 secured yet another top 30 finish for the 2002 European Ryder Cup Captain.

“I think I played pretty good this week,” he said. “I had a really good back nine on the first day and played very steady golf the next two days.

“Today I played world class golf. I hit some of the best shots I have ever hit.

"I just couldn’t make the putts. I couldn’t convert. Otherwise the 69 would have been 63 or 64. Putting is a big part of the game, but my putter was ice cold this week.

“I think the staging has been very good. From my personal, standpoint and what I’ve heard from other players. And looking at the spectators, they’re having lots of fun. The weather has been good and we’ve got a great golf course, so everyone seems in a pretty good mood.”
