Welshman Ian Woosnam returns to Conwy Golf Club for the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open from August 24-26 keen to have another shot at winning on home soil.
The 1991 Masters Champion finished runner up to Peter Mitchell the last time the Senior Tour visited the Caernarvonshire course in 2008, missing out on back-to-back titles having secured his maiden Senior Tour victory a fortnight previously in Poland.
Woosnam, who hails from Oswestry, went on to win the Senior Tour Order of Merit that year, but the 2006 European Ryder Cup Captain admits he would love to make amends for missing out on a popular home victory.
“It is great to see the Wales Senior Open back on the Senior Tour schedule with the backing of a new sponsor, Speedy Services, and I am really looking forward to competing in front of a home crowd again,” said the 54 year old, who is defending champion at this week’s Berenberg Bank Masters.
“Hopefully the Welsh golf fans will really get behind the event, and hopefully I can put on good show for them.
“I came pretty close to winning when we last played at Conwy in my first year on the Senior Tour in 2008, but unfortunately Peter Mitchell was in great form that week. Obviously now I have the chance to go back and have another shot at the title and hopefully I can get the job done this time.
“It was good for me to win again last year in Germany and I am hoping to have another victory this season. Wales would be the perfect place for that to happen.”
Conwy Golf Club was also the host venue in 2007, when the Senior Tour’s most successful player Carl Mason won by two shots en route to winning the Senior Tour Order of Merit that year.
The Speedy Services Wales Senior Open forms part of the Welsh Government’s support for golf which also includes The Senior Open Championship, hosted by Royal Porthcawl in 2014 and on two further occasions before 2024. The government’s support programme is part of the 2010 Ryder Cup legacy.
Conwy Borough Council is also supporting the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open, which is expected to attract large crowds to the north Wales coast over the Bank Holiday weekend. Entry to the event is free making it an ideal family day out. Parking is available for just £5.
