Woosnam's game in great shape ahead of Scottish Senior Open

The 1991 Masters Champion Ian Woosnam believes he is in good shape after an impressive fourth-placed finish at the US Senior Open Championship, at Scioto Country Club.

Woosnam will now turn his attention to the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open, as the Welshman goes in search of a first European Senior Tour victory of the season.

The 2006 European Ryder Cup Captain’s best finish of the year came at the Acorn Jersey Open where he finished joint runner-up to winner Gordon Manson after a three-way play-off, his fourth place finish in Ohio was his best performance in a Senior Major Championship.

He now heads straight to Archerfield Links this weekend for his first Scottish Senior Open appearance since 2014, although it is an event he has enjoyed consistency in, having finished inside the top 20 on five out of six occasions.

“I played pretty solid on Monday,” said Woosnam. “It all came down to who’s got all the putts. I played solid, I just didn’t hole enough putts to be in the lead.

“But I played good enough, and I’m really pleased with my game.”

Woosnam’s plans to travel to Scotland were affected by heavy rain across the weekend, which meant play during the final round of the competition was suspended on Sunday, forcing a Monday finish.

“I was surprised how good the course was,” he said. “I couldn’t believe how dry it was, and it was very playable. Congratulations to the grounds staff, they did a fantastic job.

“It’s difficult hanging around for a couple of days to see what was going to happen. It’s tough trying to keep momentum going.

“We were all pretty glad we could get out there and play.”
