Having looked initially solid with three pars, the World Number Two found the outstanding approach play that was the hallmark of yesterday’s birdie laden 66.
He gained a shot on the par three fourth following an iron to four feet, and produced even better with a wedge at the next to set up a two-foot birdie putt.
Another stupendous approach followed to earn a shot on seven and, as if to show all facets of his game were working in unison, Woods let his putter do the work on the par five eighth to move 10 under par.
Leading the chasing pack were Graeme McDowell and Woods’ familiar foe Phil Mickelson, who married improved accuracy off the tee with a hot short game to be four under for the day - a shot adrift of the lead.
Yet McDowell - another of the overnight leaders - maybe looked the most dangerous of Woods’ challengers given his outstanding consistency thus far in the tournament.
The 2010 US Open Championship Winner, starting on the tenth, began with seven successive pars before picking up shots on 17 and four.
Another birdie at five moved the Northern Irishman to nine under too, while also continuing his outstanding record of not dropping a shot through 32 holes.
Defending champion Justin Rose was eight under alongside Bubba Watson and Steve Stricker, who in future may not be so keen to offer Woods putting advice as he did earlier in the week.
