Tiger Woods moved ahead of Jack Nicklaus in the list of most wins on the US PGA Tour with victory at the AT&T National.

The American moved to 74 wins, eight behind all-time leader Sam Snead, with a magnificent final round at Congressional.

Level with compatriot Bo Van Pelt with two to play, Woods’ par at the 17th gave him a one shot lead and he hit a fine drive at the last to crank up the pressure.

Van Pelt’s approach missed the green, and Woods hooked his approach to 15 feet at the difficult 523 yard closing hole at Congressional.

He missed the birdie putt but the resulting par gave him a two under 69 and eight under par total.

Van Pelt was two further back, with Adam Scott third on five under.

Scott surged 16 places up the leaderboard to take third with a closing 67.

The Australian looked likely to challenge the leaders with five birdies in the last eight holes, but his round cooled on the back nine with bogeys at the 14th and 15th before a birdie at the 17th.

Korean Noh Seung-yul had five bogeys in a closing 73 to finish tied fourth, along with Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas and Americans Robert Garrigus and Billy Hurley III.

Scot Martin Laird finished tied 12th, England’s Greg Owen in a share of 17th and Argentina’s Andres Romero 34th.
