Woods enjoying contending at Carnoustie

Tiger Woods was pleased to be in contention at the 147th Open Championship after an excellent third round 66 left him four off the lead.

The 14-time Major champion briefly topped the leaderboard on six under as he lit up Saturday afternoon at Carnoustie.

It was the first time the American had led in any Major since the 2013 Masters Tournament, although a dropped shot on the 16th meant he finished on five under.

Woods has not played in the Open since 2015 due to injury and is without a victory since 2013, while the last of his 14 major titles to date came a decade ago in the US Open.

But the 42 year old has made a remarkable return to action since undergoing spinal fusion surgery last April.

"It seemed like everybody was shooting six, seven under and I figured I could probably do the same and I needed to with the leaders starting at six. I need to go get it," Woods said.

I've got a chance at this, which is great - Tiger Woods

"It's one of my better rounds I've played. I felt I really had control of the ball."

That was certainly not true on the 18th, his tee shot seemingly destined to find the Barry Burn only to take a fortunate bounce to the right to stay on dry land.

But Woods made the most of his good fortune to make par and added: "It kept me in the fight.

"It would be better (to have led) on Sunday but I'm right there. I've got a chance at this, which is great."

Woods reached the turn in 33 after three birdies on the front nine and rolled in three more before his aberration on the 16th. Woods was also close to birdies on the 13th and 15th but did escape damage on the 18th by making par after hitting the wall of the Barry Burn.

He added: "I played well today, I really did. I hit a lot of good shots. I really didn't feel like I really made a bad swing until 18.

"I really felt like I had control of the golf ball and, on top of that, I made some longer putts, which was nice. The golf course was gettable."
