Wonderful Watson leads the way

Tom Watson just missed out on shooting his age in the opening round of the US Senior Open, but the 65 year old has the consolation of a one shot lead at Del Paso Country Club, Sacramento.

The eight-time Major Champion, who is an Honorary Member of the European Senior Tour, had a 35ft putt on the last hole to match his age, but the putt stopped short and he had to settle for a four under par round of 66

“Man, did I want to make that putt,” said Watson, who is looking to complete the career grand slam of Senior Major Championships. “I was grinding on that putt more than any putt in a long time. Shoot my age in a U.S. Open championship? That would have been pretty special."

In searing heat in Sacramento, Watson overcame an early double bogey and had four birdies in a six-hole stretch after the turn. He is one shot clear of six players on three under par - Michael Allen, Lee Janzen, Jeff Hart, Jim Carter, P.H. Horgan and Woody Austin.

Defending champion Colin Montgomerie is a further shot back in a share of eighth position after an opening round of 68, which left the Scot satisfied with his first day’s return.

"Right in there where I've got to be,” said Montgomerie.

Englishman Barry Lane joined former Ryder Cup captain Montgomerie on two under par, while compatriots Philip Golding and Paul Wesselingh, and Australian Peter Fowler are a further shot back on one under par, sharing 13th position.
