Willett surges into Masters lead

Danny Willett opened up a three-shot lead in the closing stages of the Masters Tournament as defending champion Jordan Spieth fell victim to Amen Corner at Augusta National.

Willett came into the final round three shots behind the defending champion and trailed by five at the turn as Spieth rattled off four straight birdies to look to be in control in Georgia.

But the Englishman birdied the 13th and 14th while Spieth bogeyed the tenth and 11th and, when the American found the water twice on the 12th for a quadruple bogey, Willett was two ahead.

That cushion lasted a matter of seconds as Willett's playing partner Lee Westwood chipped in for eagle on the 15th, but a Willett birdie coupled with a Westwood bogey on the next opened up a gap.

Dustin Johnson was alongside Westwood and Spieth at two under with four to play, with Paul Casey and J B Holmes in the clubhouse at one under.

Willett had birdied the sixth and when he made another gain on the eighth coupled with a Spieth bogey on the fifth, the gap was just one shot.

The World Number Two then made those four birdies in a row and looked in imperious form as he aimed to become just the fourth man to defend the Masters title.

But as he dropped six shots in three holes, Willett took advantage.

Westwood was two under for the day as he stood on the 15th tee and proceeded to make the eagle that gave him hope of a first Major Championship at his 17th Masters Tournament.

Johnson recovered from a double bogey on the fifth with birdies on the sixth, eighth, ninth and 13th.

Matthew Fitzpatrick had earlier fired an excellent closing 67 to get to level par alongside Søren Kjeldsen in his first Masters as a professional.

There was also drama on the 16th, which saw three holes-in-one in the same round for the first time with Shane Lowry, Andy Sullivan and Louis Oosthuizen all recording aces, the latter after a deflection off Holmes' ball.

Earlier in the day, Amateur Championship winner Romain Langasque equalled the back nine record for an amateur, coming back in 31 to sign for a 68 and finish the week ten over.
