Willett ends on winning note

Danny Willett’s brilliant WGC – Cadillac Match Play debut ended in winning style as he saw off Jim Furyk in the third-place play-off.

Willett made birdies from 17 feet on the 12th and 42 feet on the 13th to set up a 3 and 2 victory over the American veteran at TPC Harding Park, a result which moves him from 49th to inside the top 40 of the Official World Golf Ranking.

The 28 year old had previously topped his group with a perfect 3-0 record before beating fellow Englishmen Lee Westwood and Tommy Fleetwood.

His run ended with a semi-final defeat to Gary Woodland on Sunday morning, but Willett was delighted with his performance.

“It's a bit of a crazy day, obviously,” said Willett. “This morning played some really good golf against Gary and he played great.

“This afternoon I played pretty good - a few loose ones, but I’m happy with it.”

“I've been playing good. I've had a couple of good weeks of practice back home.

“Things are kind of in the right place and the golf course suited my eye. It's a different format; I haven't played it for a few years, but obviously it was nice to get back into match play.

“It's been a good week. It's been a pretty crazy year with a win early on, and all the points we've racked up at home. It's nice to come over here and play big events.”
