Anticipation had been building all week to the first Major Championship of 2016 and once Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player got things started with the ceremonial first tee shot, the players got the business of the week under way.

Jim Herman was the first man out and he made a dream start to his Masters debut with birdies on the first and second but fell back as a collection of players made their moves.

Among them was Wiesberger, who birdied the second and seventh to turn in 34 and share the lead at two under with Open Championship winner Zach Johnson, who had back-to-back gains on the sixth and seventh.

Victor Dubuisson, Thongchai Jaidee, Louis Oosthuizen, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood were then all part of a large European Tour contingent a shot back.

Tom Watson, playing in his 43rd and final Masters, was also one under alongside defending champion Jordan Spieth, amateur Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English and Paul Casey.

Rory McIlroy, in search of a career Grand Slam of Major Championships this week, was due out in the final group of the day.
