Widegren joins Chesters at summit

An early birdie blitz saw Pontus Widegren grab a share of the lead when the first round of the weather-affected Andalucía Valderrama Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation resumed after another delay on Friday morning.

Sixty players had to return to complete their opening rounds on day two after four hours of playing time were lost due to stormy conditions at Real Club Valderrama on Thursday.

But more inclement weather caused another suspension on Friday, with no play possible until 11.30am local time - two-and-a-half hours after the scheduled restart time of 9.00am.

Swede Widegren began the day three shots behind overnight leader Ashley Chesters after notching two birdies in six holes before play was suspended due to darkness on Thursday evening.

And he picked up where he left off on Friday, reeling off back-to-back birdies at the 16th and 17th before starting his back nine with another gain at the first to join Chesters on five under par.

Widegren began the week in 218th place in the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex, and with only the top 116 retaining their playing privileges for 2019, a big week is required in Spain.

Frenchman Grégory Bourdy remains one shot off the lead after producing an opening 67, while defending champion Sergio Garcia and Australian Jason Scrivener are on three under.
