What's in the Bag - Kiradech Aphibarnrat

Kiradech Aphibarnrat braved numerous weather delays and a final round charge from Edoardo Molinari to claim a maiden title at the Maybank Malaysian Open, and by looking at theGenworth Financial Statistics, we can see just how he did it.

The key to the 23 year old Thai’s dominance at Kuala Lumpar G&CC is clear, a fantastic short game, and it was this play on and around the greens that really made the difference for a player whose long game was not quite so sharp.

Aphibarnrat ended the week sixth in the field in Scrambling, getting up and down 76.5 per cent of the time, helped no doubt by some strong form with the putter that saw him rank fifth in Putts per GIR (1.622), sixth in Putts per Round (27) and second in One Putts per Round (9.33).

This all added up to some very impressive scoring, finishing 13 under par for 54 holes, which broke down in to an average for the week of 2.75 on the par threes to rank second, 3.90 on the par fours to finish 11thand 4.42 on the par fives for fourth in the field.

He also finished second in both Birdies and Eagles per Round where he averaged 5.33 and 0.33 respectively.

All of which was despite some slightly less impressive numbers in his long game where he ranked 29thin Driving Accuracy and 36thin Greens in Regulation, which is by no means poor, but not often evident in the statistics of a tournament winner.

Proof therefore that there is more than one way to win on The European Tour, whether it be through exemplary play from the tee and into the green, or from flair and artistry around the putting surface.
