Lee Westwood and Matthew Fitzpatrick were making an early charge up the leaderboard on day one of the US Open before play was delayed due to the threat of lightning at Oakmont Country Club.
The English duo were both two under for their rounds after six holes, one behind leader Andrew Landry, when the horn sounded to bring the players off the course at 10.04am local time.
Oakmont is renowned as one of the toughest courses in North America, with the winning mark sitting at five over when Angel Cabrera won here in 2007, but ten players were under par on Thursday morning.
American Landry led the way at three under with birdies on the tenth, 17th and second but the English duo were impressing with some stunning shots to sit a shot back.
Fitzpatrick holed out from a bunker on the second and then drained a 41-footer on the sixth to get to two under, with Westwood making a birdie on the 12th and then dropping a shot on the 13th.
He bounced back in brilliant style, though, holing out from 124 yards on the next for an eagle to move into the group in second alongside American Kevin Streelman and New Zealander Danny Lee.
Ireland's Shane Lowry was then at one under after holing a pitch on the first to sit alongside defending champion Jordan Spieth and three more Americans in Kevin Chappell, Harris English and Patrick Wilkes-Krier.
Frenchman Romain Wattel and Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello were then in the group at level par, a shot clear of a large group including former champions Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer, and Masters Tournament winner Danny Willett.
