Paul Wesselingh has moved a step closer to retaining his ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship after a clutch of birdies on the front nine left the Englishman two shots clear on 17 under par through 14 holes.

Wesselingh picked up six shots early on Sunday thanks to birdies at the first, sixth, eighth, ninth, tenth and 14th holes to hold off the challenge of the charging Angel Franco, who himself was six under par for the day just two shots back at 15 under par.

Meanwhile, Ian Woosnam made the fastest start having begun the final day four shots adrift. The Welshman followed an opening eagle at the par five first with birdies at the third, seventh, ninth, 11thand 14thholes as he moved into contention for a fifth European Senior Tour title on 14 under par through 17.

American Mike Cunning, who started the day one shot in arrears, remains in contention on 13 under par, while Steen Tinnning’s bid to become the first Dane to win on the European Senior Tour looks like coming up a little short at 12 under with three holes to go.

Second round leader Des Smyth has also struggled on Sunday, with two bogeys on the front nine seeing the Irishman drop back to a tie for eighth place on nine under par through 15 holes.
