Steve Webster is having the time of his life at the Shot Clock Masters – and not just because he is only one off the lead heading into the weekend.
The Englishman - who has suffered with wrist problems in recent seasons - lost his card after 19 consecutive years on the European Tour in 2014 and was not initially on the entry list to tee it up this week at Diamond Country Club.
Withdrawals meant he made his way into the field and he was excited to play in the innovative new format that sees every player on the clock for every shot and penalties in place for those who do not play within the allotted time.
Opening rounds of 69-67 have only improved his outlook and the two-time winner is excited for what the weekend may bring.
I love it,” he said. “I've always been a quick player.
“I couldn't wait to get into the tournament, I was a reserve a few weeks ago and I was crossing my fingers to get in. I love quick golf and this is how it should be. Everyone is so positive about it and how it's gone so far.
“I played lovely yesterday and just continued it today, really. It was nice to have a late tee time and then an early one so you just get straight back on with it."
Justin Walters is alongside Webster at eight under after a second consecutive 68 as he too looks to regain his playing privileges.
The South African made one of the shots of the day when he holed a huge putt from off the green for an eagle on the fourth and he is delighted with his progress so far.
“I kept out of trouble, managed to play the par fives at four under I think, I just kept it in front of me,” he said. “And obviously I didn't get any penalty shots from the shot clock, so that helped.
“Today was definitely tougher than yesterday. The greens started baking out a bit and the wind picked up, especially on the back nine. If you gave me this score at the start of the week I would have been happy."
Home favourite Matthias Schwab is a shot further back after making just a single bogey all week and he is sure to have a vociferous local backing over the weekend.
“It was a little tougher today with the wind and the greens were a little bumpy with spike marks but it was great,” he said. “Tougher conditions but the course is in good shape.
“I managed to play alright. I couldn't make any more birdies coming in but it's okay, it's a four under for the day.
“I'm sure the crowd will be on my side over the weekend which is a nice thing to know. The crowds were great this afternoon so I'm looking forward to playing in front of them tomorrow and Sunday.”
