Watson snatches lead role from Holmes

Bubba Watson came from five shots behind J B Holmes to two ahead in the space of seven holes in a dramatic start to the final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

Holmes looked favourite to win his first World Golf Championships event after rounds of 62, 73 and 70 gave him a five shot lead over compatriots Watson and Dustin Johnson.

However, a combination of bogeys from Holmes and birdies from Watson turned the tournament on its head in wet and windy conditions at Trump National Doral.

Watson, who has finished second twice in this event and each time gone on to win the Masters a few weeks later, birdied the first, third and fifth and was within a shot of the lead when Holmes three-putted the third from long range.

Holmes also bogeyed the fifth and sixth and with Watson carding his fourth birdie of the day on the seventh, the left-hander – chasing back-to-back WGC titles after winning the HSBC Champions at the end of last season - suddenly found himself with a two shot lead.

Johnson was also just a shot behind Holmes on seven under after coming within inches of recording a hole-in-one on the fourth for the second day running.

South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen was in a share of fourth on five under, two ahead of World Number One Rory McIlroy.

Johnson joined Holmes on eight under par with a birdie on the tenth and the pair were soon within one of the lead when Watson found sand twice on the 11th to drop his first shot of the day.

The tournament now looked to be between those three players, with Adam Scott on five under with three to play and McIlroy three under playing the last.

Watson then made a mess of the par five 12th to card his second consecutive bogey and fall back into a tie for the lead with Holmes and Johnson on eight under par.

McIlroy's eventful week came to a fitting end when he hit two balls into the water on the last and then chipped in from the back of the green for a double-bogey six.

All that added up to a closing 72 and a one under par total of 287, which was still good enough for a share of ninth as the tough closing stretch of the Blue Monster took its toll on many players.

A wayward drive from Watson on the 14th led to his third bogey in the space of four holes and left Johnson and Holmes sharing the lead on eight under par.

However, both players then saw their approach to the 14th run through to the back of the green and, despite hitting the poorer chip, Johnson was the one to save par and claim the outright lead.
