Wagner goes low in Acapulco

A six under par round of 64 saw Challenge Tour champion Alan Wagner of Argentina grab the outright lead on day one of the TLA Televisa Players Championship on the Tour de las Americas.

Starting on the tenth tee, the 21 year old rattled off six birdies and a bogey on his front nine, before adding two more birdies and another bogey after the turn to establish a one-stroke lead at the Ted Robinson-designed Fairmont Acapulco Princess in Acapulco, Mexico.

“I’m happy about my game, and about how focused I am on what I need to do. Today it went well, so it’s a nice way to start,” said Wagner, winner of the TLA–European Challenge Tour co-sanctioned Club Colombia Masters two years ago.

With the tournament taking a Pro-Am format for the first two days, concentration was the name of the game for Wagner, who recently moved from his native Buenos Aires to Miami, America.

He said: “When you play with amateurs the degree of difficulty increases, so what I did best today was to remain patient and focused for the whole round. My golf was very steady. I did well on the greens and my short game was also good, which really pays off when you’re playing this course.”
