Van Der Walt closes in on Oosthuizen

Defending champion Louis Oosthuizen saw his overnight advantage halved by Tjaart Van Der Walt as the third round of the Africa Open began at East London Golf Club.

The former Open Champion carded a brilliant 62 on Friday to lead by two at the halfway stage, but despite birdieing his first three holes Oosthuizen was only one clear of Van Der Walt after four holes.

Van Der Walt birdied the first four – but it was still not quite as impressive as his performance on Friday when he played the same stretch in five under courtesy of a hole-in-one at the second and an eagle at the par five next.

South Africans continued to dominate the leaderboard, with first round leader Thomas Aiken and two-time US Open Champion Retief Goosen tied for third on 16 under, two behind Oosthuizen.

England’s Danny Willett birdied four of his first six holes to move into fifth, while Richard Sterne continued to impress after an 11-month absence caused by a back injury.

The five-time European Tour winner was six under for the day at the turn and up into a share of sixth place.
