Van Der Walt ahead as tight finish looms

Dawie Van Der Walt turned one in front of compatriot Darren Fichardt as the race for the Tshwane Open went to the wire at Copperleaf Golf & Country Estate.

The two South Africans were part of a four-way tie for the lead with compatriot Charl Coetzee and Chile’s Mark Tullo overnight.

It was Coetzee and Fichardt who were first to kick clear, both players birdieing the second and third.

Van Der Walt made it a three-way tie for the lead when he became only the fourth player this week to eagle the par five fourth; at 685 yards the longest hole in European Tour history.

Recent Africa Open winner Fichardt birdied the fifth to go back in front, but Van Der Walt stole a march when he picked up shots at the next two to lead by one on 20 under par.

Tullo gained shots at the fourth and seventh to be two back in third, but bogeyed the eighth so he and Coetzee turned three behind, along with American Peter Uihlein who had an eagle at the long eighth.

Van Der Walt started for home with a bogey, but birdies at the 12th and 15th put him two clear and on course for a first victory on The European Tour and Sunshine Tour.
