US PGA Championship day one - What they said

Thorbjørn Olesen and Kevin Kisner will share the lead heading into round two of the US PGA Championship.

Patrick Reed

Here, we take a look at what some of the European Tour's other leading challengers had to say after their first rounds.

Patrick Reed (69, -2)

"Going out in the morning, having benign winds, having the softer conditions, you have to go out and attack this golf course. I feel like I did that pretty well. I made some minor adjustments here and there. I probably only had two or three loose golf swings out there and unfortunately one cost me. Besides that, it was a steady first round. I feel like it's moving in the right direction. I've got to keep my energy level up. Being my ninth week in a row, you have to save your energy for tournament rounds. I can get ahead of myself easily by going out and putting in a really long Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday."

Tommy Fleetwood (70, -1)

"The course is brutal, really. It's a really tough test. Anything par or beating the course is a great score. Just in the practice rounds, it's either playing rock hard and windy or it's been really wet with the rain and playing miles. So when you get into the tournament, you never know what to expect. Just really happy to be off the course at one under. The course is quite long and then the greens are firm and quite slopey so it's hard. The pins were okay today but sometimes it's so hard to hit greens. You can hit a good shot and just miss the green and on top of that the rough around the green just makes it hard to chip. There's no let-up, really. You've never got one shot where you kind of feel you can go easy for ten minutes or you have a little rest. It's just five hours of real tough golf."

Jon Rahm (70, -1)

"It was a great day. I've been looking forward to a day like this in a Major Championship for a long time. I don't think I've had this much fun on a Major, I don't think ever. Tee to green the first nine was absolutely perfect. Even if I stumbled a little bit on the first few holes on the back nine, I brought it back. Overall, one under par on a Major Championship with the conditions that we had today, with the greens that we had today, I'm extremely satisfied. Last time I was this happy was probably the Irish Open. Not quite the same but it was up there with some of the rounds I played there.

Rory McIlroy (72, +1)

"It was okay. I started well, two under through 12, coming through part of the course where you're looking to pick a couple of shots up on 14 and 15. Played that stretch of holes, 13, 14, 15, in three over. So if I just could have had that three-hole stretch back, I think other than that I played nicely, did what I needed to do. Birdied the par fives, birdied the holes that you should birdie. I'm only five behind, four under is the best score out there. It's a tough golf course. I shoot something in the 60s tomorrow, I move right up there. So yeah, I'm in it."
