Uihlein among early leaders

Peter Uihlein continued his fine form as the Volvo China Open began at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club.

The American, named Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 2013, was fourth in last week’s Shenzhen International.

And after starting on the back nine, he carded four birdies in an outward 32 as he targets a second European Tour victory.

At four under par Uihlein was level with Welshman Bradley Dredge and New Zealand’s Michal Hendry.

Welshman Dredge, who won the last of two European Tour titles nine years ago in Switzerland, went out in 34 before picking up further shots on the tenth and 13th, while Hendry was set to record the clubhouse target as he reached four under with two to play.

France’s Alex Levy was one off the early pace at three under through 13 holes, with 19 year old Chinese sensation Li Hao-tong – beaten in a play-off by Kiradech Aphibarnrat last Sunday – a shot further back.
