When does this year's tournament take place?
Traditionally, the U.S. Open is scheduled every year for the third weekend of June, with the final round scheduled for Father’s Day Sunday.
This year’s 124th U.S. Open runs from Thursday, June 13 to Sunday, June 16.
There are three official practice days in the lead up, from Monday to Wednesday.
Where is it being held?
Pinehurst No. 2 will be home to the U.S. Open for the fourth time in 25 years.
The championship will return to Pinehurst Resort in 2029, 2035, 2041, and 2047.
Pinehurst No. 2 is the only golf course to have hosted all five of the USGA’s most prestigious events: U.S. Open (1999, 2005, 2014), U.S. Women’s Open (2014), U.S. Amateur (1962, 2008, 2019), U.S. Women’s Amateur (1989), and U.S. Senior Open (1994).
The Donald Ross designed course measures 7,548 yards and is a par 70, with just two par fives.
What is the format of the US Open?
The U.S. Open, like the other three Majors, is a 72-hole individual strokeplay tournament contested over four rounds of 18 holes.
Following the first 36 holes of play, the 156-player field will be reduced to the low 60 scorers and ties with those players advancing to compete in the final two rounds.
What is the format should there be a play-off?
Until 2018, if players were tied after 72 holes, the winner was determined in an 18-hole stroke-play playoff on Monday after the final round.
The USGA has since changed the format to a two-hole aggregate playoff. If still tied after two holes, players will compete in sudden death until a winner is crowned.
The last time the U.S. Open went to an 18-hole play-off was in 2008 at Torrey Pines between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate. They were still tied after 18 holes, so it then went to a sudden-death play-off, with Woods winning on the 19th hole.

Wyndham Clark claimed his maiden Major Championship title with a one-stroke victory over Rory McIlroy at the Los Angeles Country Club last year.

The top 10 finishers (and ties) are exempt into the following year’s U.S. Open. The top four finishers (and ties) are invited to the following year’s Masters Tournament.
What are some of the key storylines heading into the event?
World Number One Scottie Scheffler arrives at Pinehurst on the back of winning the Memorial Tournament over the weekend on the PGA TOUR. It was his fifth victory so far this year, having won his second Green Jacket at the Masters Tournament in April.
Robert Rock, who stopped playing competitively on the DP World Tour in 2022, makes his first Major start since the 2019 Open Championship after progressing through Final Qualifying.
The Englishman was among those to qualify at Walton Heath, alongside Major debutant Tom McKibbin and Italy’s Matteo Manassero who makes his first appearance at one of golf’s elite events since 2016.
Tiger Woods, a three-time U.S. Open winner, is set for his 23rd start at the tournament and second at Pinehurst No.2 having accepted a special exemption.
