Three to watch: Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde

The 2019 Staysure Tour season continues to gather pace this weekend as we travel to Arras for the inaugural Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde.

Paul Lawrie

Here are three players to keep an eye on this week in northern France…

The 1999 Open Champion is making his first appearance at a regular Staysure Tour event this week, just a fortnight after impressing at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.

Lawrie, who turned 50 at the start of 2019, finished in a share of 21stplace on the formidable East Course at Oak Hill, improving on his T57 result at the Regions Tradition the week before.

In his first season of balancing playing on both the European Tour and the over-50s circuit on both sides of the Atlantic, expect Lawrie to impress as he goes toe-to-toe with his contemporaries for the first time on European soil.

Roger Chapman

The two-time Senior Major champion was the most in-form player at the end of the 2018 season, finishing tenth, third and first in his last three events of that year, winning the season-ending MCB Tour Championship-Seychelles.

After missing the cut at Oak Hill, he bounced back with a T9 result at last week’s Senior Italian Open. He found himself very much in contention at Villaverde Resort, carding a final round of 69, three under par.

Jean-Francois Remesy

Jean-Francois Remesy

Remesy enjoyed his best season on the Staysure Tour last year since joining the European over-50s circuit in 2014.

The Frenchman secured his first victory at the Swiss Seniors Open, and then finished runner-up the following week at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open. Another player who ended the year strongly, Remesy finished inside the top six on three occasions, including a runner-up result at the Paris Legends Championship.

Back on home soil, expect the Frenchman to put in another strong performance.
