The final event of the European Challenge Tour’s Spanish Swing is the Challenge de España and players will tee it up again at Iberostar Real Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri. Here are our three to watch this week…
Martin Simonsen
Martin Simonsen has come alive in Spain with top ten finishes in the previous two editions of the Challenge de España, finishing in a tie for fifth place in 2020 and a tie for ninth in 2019. The 29-year-old finished on nine under par and in a tie for 11th place at last week’s Challenge de Cádiz to propel him up the Road to Mallorca Rankings by 20 places. Simonsen had struggled for form coming into the Spanish Swing but will be hoping that his performance in Cádiz has provided the platform for a climb up the Rankings.
Alfie Plant
Alfie Plant produced his best performance of the season so far to finish in a tie for 28th in the Challenge de Cádiz. The 28-year-old had missed the previous six cuts but managed to find some form in Cádiz to play his last three rounds under par and finish six under for the week. The 2017 European Amateur Champion burst onto the scene that year, playing in the Walker Cup and the Open Championship where he finished as the leading amateur and took home the Silver Medal, before progressing through the EuroPro Tour to earn Challenge Tour playing privileges. The Englishman will be hoping to take his strong finish in Cádiz into the Challenge de España and climb up the Road to Mallorca Rankings.
Henric Sturehed
Henric Sturehed has had a fine start to the Challenge Tour season and currently sits in fourth place on the Road to Mallorca Rankings after a career-best second place finish in the Dimension Data Pro-Am. The Swede has impressed at the Challenge de España with a tie for fifth last year and a tie for ninth in 2019 and will be looking for another strong performance in Cádiz with the goal of securing a place on the European Tour for next season. .
