The Masters - what they said

The first Major Championship of the year gets under way on Thursday as the golfing world descends on Augusta National for the Masters Tournament.

Jason Day

A host of the planet's top players faced media from around the globe on Tuesday, and here is what they had to say.

World Number OneJason Dayis not scared of a little competition.

"I want the best playing against the best and fighting it out. If I end up not wearing the Green Jacket at the end of Sunday but I have a fantastic competitive match against the best players in the world, that's what I'm there for. I enjoy and thrive off that competitiveness.

"I would enjoy a Spieth‑McIlroy‑Fowler‑Scott‑Watson‑Mickelson Sunday. That would be a lot of fun."

Jordan Spieth

Last year's record-breaking winnerJordan Spiethfeels in better shape than he did in 2015.

"I've had a fantastic couple of days thus far preparing and my game feels great.

"We're going to try and just use last year as momentum. We know we're capable of playing this place, we have proven it to ourselves the last two years. My game actually feels better right now than I think it did last year on Tuesday, so that's good if we can keep it consistent."

Bubba Watsonfeels Augusta National has helped him get over a recent sinus infection as he seeks a third Green Jacket.

"In roughly a 30-something-hour period, I was two hours off my bed. For me to get to this point, I'm already ahead of the game.

"This is always the best week on tour for us. This place energises you quite nicely and I'd say I'm at 80 per cent right now."

Bubba Watson

Rickie Fowlerbelieves his game is building towards that elusive first Major Championship.

"I feel like the perfect storm, combine 2014 and 2015 together, equals winning a Major, that's the way I look at it. Winning, I think it's been four times since The Players last year, two on the PGA Tour and two on The European Tour.

"It's a lot more fun winning and I definitely get excited whenever I have the chance to be in contention and to have a chance at winning a golf tournament."

Adam Scottis in a hurry to follow up his 2013 triumph at Augusta National.

"I don't want it to be the one Major that I win. I feel I've got the game to win other Majors and I'm looking to win my second Major Championship this week, and I'm driven towards doing that because I want to win a handful of Majors in my career.

"I need to get my skates on because it's getting tougher and tougher every year. There are only a few players who have been very dominant over 40 years old, and it's probably going to be harder, too, as the young 20‑somethings are better and better. That's probably a trend that's going to continue to happen."

Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson

Three-time winnerPhil Mickelsonenjoys a playful gloat about his three Green Jackets before the Champions Dinner.

"Green Jacket stories - for me, it's just a great way to give the other guys grief, give them a little jab here or there. I always like to rough up Dustin (Johnson). He's just a great target, I think.

"We were walking down one, and I just said, 'So, what are your plans tonight?'. Might have been a little too subtle, okay. That's been my favorite thing about having the Green Jacket."
