This week marks the second of two Czech events on the Road to Mallorca International Schedule as the Kaskáda Golf Challenge takes place at Kaskáda Golf Resort. Here’s what you need to know before the action gets under way on Thursday…
Dreaming of The Open
The leading non-exempt golfer at the Kaskáda Golf Challenge will earn a place in The 149th Open. Golfers withdrawing from Final Qualifying have been offered alternative opportunities to qualify at several events, including the Kaskada Golf Challenge and next week’s Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge. This is after The R&A offered additional qualifying places at The 149th Open Championship at Royal St George’s due to existing international travel restrictions and in an attempt to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission. Golfers who competed in Final Qualifying and did not secure one of the 12 places will be unable to qualify through these events.
Three nine-hole circuits
Kaskáda Golf Resort provides a tough test for golfers with its undulating fairways and greens, unique tee box locations, strategically placed bunkers and lakes. There are three nine-hole courses at the resort; the Wooden, Stone and Iron.
The Wooden course requires golfers to navigate along a peaceful valley surrounded by a mature oak forest and includes a picturesque downhill par three seventh hole. The Stone course is played over mountainous terrain with numerous lakes for players to take into consideration, while the Iron course is considered the simpler of the three as it is played over flatter ground with fewer hazards.
History making Czech in the field
Ondřej Lieser has been a regular on the European Tour this season, but he will tee it up on home soil this week at the Kaskáda Golf Challenge. Lieser made history by becoming the first golfer from the Czech Republic to win on the Road to Mallorca when he claimed victory at the Challenge de España in 2020. Lieser went on to win the Challenge Tour Grand Final and was subsequently crowned Road to Mallorca Number One, the first Czech to top the Rankings and earn full playing rights on the European Tour.
Fantastic venue
Kaskáda Golf Resort has hosted several high profile tournaments including the Grand Final Czech PGA Tour, where Challenge Tour member Filip Mrůzek triumphed in 2015 with an eight shot victory over Ondřej Lieser. It was also the setting for the D+D Real Czech Challenge in 2019 which saw Englishman Ross McGowan claim his third Challenge Tour victory.
The resort provides golfers with everything they need with a four-star hotel, restaurant with a golf course view, cosy wellness centre and excellent practice facilities including a 300-metre-long driving range.
