Thailand storm through in St Albans

Thailand made it two wins out of two to become the first team to progress to the quarter-finals at the GolfSixes.

Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat

The 16 pairs were playing greensomes match play over six holes in a round-robin, with the top two teams in each group of four advancing to tomorrow's last eight at Centurion Club.

The Thai pair of Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee followed up their opening 5-1 victory over Denmark with a 2-1 win against the USA to advance from Group A, and be the only team with a 100 per cent record after two matches.

The defending champion Danes drew 1-1 with the European Women and the three remaining teams in that group all have a chance to advance alongside Thailand.

On a glorious day in St Albans with bumper crowds, England Women delighted the locals with a 4-1 win over South Africa to leave their fate in their own hands in Group D, with the home men also still in the mix after a 2-2 draw with Sweden.

The European Captains lost 2-1 to Australia, meaning they cannot advance from Group B, with South Korea beating Spain 3-1 to keep that pool wide open.

All four teams can still advance from Group C after France beat Ireland 2-1, and Scotland and Italy drew 1-1.

Thailand and the USA halved their first three holes in pars but Jaidee saw his second lip out on the par four fourth and another birdie followed, with the American pair birdieing the last.

"The way Thongchai was hitting was fantastic," said Aphibarnrat. "I holed the ball on the green quite well.

"We didn't play our best game, I didn't play my best golf but the way we have done the first 12 holes, we are tough to beat."

Denmark and the European Women halved their first four holes and while the Danes edged ahead with a birdie on the fifth, Carlota Ciganda and Mel Reid hit back with a birdie on the last to keep their hopes alive.

A stunning tee-shot from Georgia Hall on the par three first put England Women 1-0 ahead and they also won the second, fourth and sixth, with South Africa taking the third.

A birdie-par start moved England Men 2-0 up against the Swedes but last week's winner Alexander Björk and Joakim Lagergren hit back, taking the fourth and fifth.

Solheim Cup skipper Catriona Matthew holed a monster putt on the first to put herself and Thomas Bjørn 1-0 ahead but Australia won the fourth and fifth to end their campaign.

Spain had gone 1-0 up with a birdie on the third but South Korea hit back with three gains in a row for a comfortable win.

Gavin Moynihan's stunning tee-shot on the first put Ireland 1-0 ahead but a par was enough to hand France the next before Mike Lorenzo-Vera and Romain Wattel birdied the last.

A birdie on the third had nudged Italy ahead in a repeat of last season's Consolation Match but Scotland eagled the last to keep their campaign alive.
