Swiss splendour suits in-form Fowler

The man he succeeded as champion, Englishman Paul Wesselingh, is also in the field, as he looks to build on an encouraging start to the season. Wesselingh, who defeated  compatriot Kevin Spurgeon in a play-off two years ago, captured his eighth Senior Tour title at the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open last month, and finished 23rd in America last week.

Another Englishman, Carl Mason, is the only player to win the event on three occasions, having claimed the title back-to-back in 2007 and 2008, and again in 2010. The most prolific winner in the history of the Senior Tour has also made a promising start to the 2015 campaign, finishing eighth in Wales and third in the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship at Close House.

The tournament also marks the Senior Tour debut of Lianwei Zhang, the pioneer of professional golf in China, who turned 50 on May 2.

Zhang made history in January 2003 when he became the first Chinese golfer to win an event on The European Tour, birdieing the final hole at Laguna National Golf & Country Club to claim the Caltex Masters in Singapore, and he will now be hoping to become the first Chinese player to triumph on the Senior Tour.

Another debutant is Peter O’Malley, who reached 50 on June 23. The Australian won three times on The European Tour, the last of these being the 2001 English Open. A veteran of 461 European Tour events, his first European Tour success came at the 1992 Scottish Open. He famously played the last five holes in seven under par to pip Colin Montgomerie by two shots.
