Sullivan claimed his maiden title at the South African Open Championship at nearby Glendower in January, and a five under par outward 32 put the 28 year old a shot clear on 16 under par at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club.

After birdies at the second, fourth, sixth and eighth, the former Walker Cup star fired his approach to tap-in range at the ninth.

Another former amateur star, Ireland’s Kevin Phelan, was second on 15 under having played his first 13 holes in six under par,

English pair David Howell and Anthony Wall were alongside South Africans Chris Swanepoel and Jaco Van Zyl in a share of third on 14 under, with overnight leader Wallie Coetsee among those a shot further back.
