Stunning start for Spieth

Jordan Spieth wasted little time taking charge of the 115th US Open Championship when the third round as the Masters Tournament winner made a stunning start.

The World Number Two holed from 35 feet on the second and 40 feet on the third to move to seven under par and into a three-shot lead over South African Branden Grace.

Grace had opened with four straight pars, while Spieth’s playing partner Patrick Reed ran up a double bogey on the second after taking two shots to escape from a bunker.

Dustin Johnson recovered from a bogey on the second with a birdie on the third, only to miss from two feet for par on the fourth.

Earlier Louis Oosthuizen continued his remarkable comeback at Chambers Bay with a second straight round of 66.

The South African looked to be heading for a missed cut when he opened with a seven over par 77 on Thursday, but after improving by 11 shots on Friday the former Open Champion’s revival continued at pace on Saturday with birdies at the first, third and sixth taking him back to level par.

Oosthuizen almost aced the ninth as his tee shot lipped out, but missed the subsequent birdie effort and bogeyed the 11th.

However, birdies at the 12th and 13th took him under par for the first time this week.

World Number One Rory McIlroy was left frustrated with his putting as he carded a level par 70 to remain four over par.
