Steve Stricker is set to claim his second Senior Major Championship of the season as he opened up a six shot lead at the U.S. Senior Open Championship at the end of the third round.
The American started the day two strokes ahead of Jerry Kelly but extended his advantage with a bogey free round of 66, four under par, to better the lowest 54-hole score in the history of the event by three shots.
The 52-year-old, who won his first Senior Major at the Regions Tradition last month, made three birdies during his first nine holes on day three and claimed his fourth gain of the day at the par four 11th before closing his third round with seven consecutive pars.
With a second Senior Major in his sights, Stricker is not getting ahead of himself with 18 holes left to play at Warren Golf Course.
“I think I'm just going to keep doing the same things I've been doing,” he said. “My whole objective is to get it in the fairway and then see what pins I feel comfortable shooting at or steering away from. That's been the game plan, and I've been putting well. I hit a lot of good putts again today, a few misreads, but all in all, I putted it nicely again.”
Staysure Tour member and two-time U.S. Open Champion Retief Goosen sits in a share of fifth place, with fellow Staysure Tour members Bernhard Langer and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who charged up the leaderboard with a round of 67, three under par, a further shot behind at six under par total.
Paul Broadhurst, the 2018 KitchenAid Senior PGA Champion, carded a two under par round of 68 to move to tied 14th at four under par total.
